TRADE WINDS LIMITING FISHING OPPORTUNITIES

With the first cyclone starting in October and a slightly higher number predicted for this season, we are already seeing the telltale increased swell patterns becoming more frequent.
Strong southeasterly winds have limited a lot of fishing to the western coastline which has taken a beating by the local fleet. The majority of action has been around the three offshore FADs, with yellowfin tuna making up most of the catch. The numbers of mahimahi continue to decrease as their season ends.
There are still reasonable wahoo being caught although their numbers are also tapering off. The best catches have been on the eastern side of the island when weather has permitted access. Schools of skipjack and juvenile yellowfin appear to be building around the FADs, although the sharks seem to be doing their darndest to keep them from aggregating.
I recently had the pleasure of taking my visiting nephew Conley Alexander and his dad Mark out for a fish where they got in the mix with some obliging locals!
