Wow, the amazing run of yellowfin has not let up! Fish to 65kg are being landed off the north and south coasts of Upolu from Apolima to Aleipata. Acres of schooling yellowfin are turning the ocean into a frothing white mass as they feed on whitebait and sardines.
Capt. Vaughan Simpson and anglers aboard Fua II have been experiencing some amazing fishing, landing up to eight big yellowfin per trip, including two new Samoa Junior records for Mike Levi and Luana Ah Ben and a Junior blue marlin record to Luana on one trip alone. Another highlight of the month was the SIGFA ‘Coast 2 Coast’ Tournament, where 10 boats circumnavigated the main island of Upolu, fishing over two days. Sensational fishing was experienced by all boats with over 40 yellowfin and lots of mahimahi weighed, along with a black marlin and a short-billed spearfish released. Team Troppo fishing aboard their 35ft Bertram Pure Indulgence were the winners, weighing in multiple big yellows, a mahimahi and releasing two billfish.
As we head into March and April the yellowfin run will continue, blue marlin will be patrolling the drop-offs, while the numbers of mahimahi, sailfish and wahoo will increase. Popping GTs and barred (spanish) mackerel over the inshore reefs will also be explosive.
