The run of big yellowfin out the front of Apia continues, with many anglers landing that fish of a lifetime. Anglers fishing with Team Troppo aboard Pure Indulgence have been landing plenty of fish over the 50kg mark straight out the front between the 1,000m and 2,000m dropoffs. Some double and triple hook-up action has kept many of their anglers busy. Anglers fishing aboard Free Spirit and Reel Cat have also been in on the action. Along the south coast, Capt. Ian Moroney has been landing goodsized yellowfin in the waters adjacent to Nusafe Island. There have also been quality mahimahi to 15kg caught in the same vicinity.
Inshore, off the north coast, the action has continued with big, barred (spanish) mackerel schooling just outside the harbour entrance and along the 30-metre line to the east of Taumeasina Island Resort, as far as Solo Solo. The blue marlin bite has been quiet, with only a few fish being released this last couple of weeks.
As we head into our winter months, the yellowfin action should continue, while the numbers of mahimahi, sailfish and wahoo will increase as the water cools and the bait thickens.
