Classic, glassy days have kept the bite slow but steady over the past month. Team Troppo reports that the yellowfin tuna bite slowed a bit as the water temperature rose to 32.5°C. However, when they did find patches of cooler water, the YFT came on strong, with fish to 70kg being weighed by their anglers.
Solid mahimahi to 15kg have also been found around the edges of large schools of blue bait currently being found off the north coast. Blue marlin are being landed, but the calm, hot water has slowed the bite. Spanish mackerel have also been shy on the chew, but those fish that have been enticed to a lure are solid fish averaging 15kg. Also, the annual SIGFA Samoa International Tournamentnt has just concluded. As always, it was a fantastic event with plenty of great catches and fun for all.
June and July will see the number and size of the mahimahi increase. The annual run of juvenile blue marlin will kick in as the water temperature drops and wahoo will become a regular part of the catch.
