With summer fast approaching, here are our top tips for when you’re venturing out on the water:
1) Grab your Coastguard membership – if you’ve got one, make sure it’s up-to-date and if you haven’t, make sure you do! For only $130 you’ve got peace of mind getting your pride and joy back out there with free nonurgent on-water assistance when things don’t quite go to plan. Visit boatiesbestmate.nz or call 0800 BOATIE.
2) Wear a lifejacket – take them and wear them! Ensure the lifejacket you wear is fit for purpose and fits correctly. Make sure there’s one for everyone on board before you push off from the ramp!
3) Ensure you log your trip report with your VHF, *500 on your mobile or on the free Coastguard app and carry two forms of waterproof communications (a phone in a waterproof case and a charged and working VHF radio).
4) Always check the weather before you leave and keep an eye on marine conditions while you’re on the water as they can change quickly. You can view specific weather conditions at your favourite fishing spot on the free Coastguard app.
5) Take your Skipper’s responsibility seriously – you are responsible for the safety of everyone on board your vessel.
