For whatever reason, 2023 has been a shocking year for weather along my home coast of hawkes bay. Weather gaps were non-existent right through winter, so i figured it was about time i cut my losses and got on the road to find somewhere to scratch my kayak fishing itch.

New no-take fishing areas have been formally adopted by northland regional council following an environment court decision that confirmed all fishing – including recreational – is no longer permitted from maunganui bay (deep water cove) to oporua (oke bay) in the bay of islands, as well as around the mimiwhangata peninsula.

The fiordland marine guardians say new recreational fishing rules will hopefully help to rebuild hardhit fisheries and maintain them into the future.

In the 23 years since the hauraki gulf marine park was established to protect and enhance this taonga (treasure) it has become more degraded. The scallop fishery is closed, the crayfish population is described as functionally extinct, the invasive caulerpa seaweed is spreading, and mushy flesh fish are more commonly caught. If we want our kids and theirs to enjoy a vibrant marine environment, now is our time to speak up for future generations.

The water is warming up and fish have been feeding voraciously, putting on condition. Combined with settled patches of weather, anglers have had an easier time getting bent, out on the water.

The kai ika project is a non-profit initiative bringing communities together to share previously underutilised fish parts to reduce waste and feed the community while conserving fish for future generations.

These days we’re finding that reducing waste is an everincreasing job and we sometimes find ourselves searching for ways to utilise more parts of fish we once might have discarded. Instead of taking just the fillets from our catch, we try to use as much as we possibly can and make the most of the delicious kaimoana that are found throughout the fish like the wings, cheeks, frames, heads and skin.

An angling staple

Snap clips, coastlock clips, corkscrew clips, swivel clips, speed clips, shark clips… the list goes on.it’s obvious that clips play important roles in the world of fishing for many anglers, theoretically enabling us to quickly swap lures or rigs without needing to cut the mainline/leader and retie the knot or re-crimp. Yet up until recent times, i’ve often done my best to avoid using them as they are usually a potential weak point and have let me down many times in the past.

Spring was already well underway before my local trevally run got started. They had been slow to show up.i had started to worry. Friends in auckland had been catching good numbers of trevally already, while other friends in tauranga had been talking of a “trevally drought.” for a while there i didn’t know which way my bay of islands trevally season was going to go.

Agroup of recreational fishers caught with a total of 348 fish, including more than 9 times their collective daily limit for snapper, have been fined $10,500.

Over the years i have encountered many fisheries management regimes that have been purported to be worldleading, including our own much-vaunted quota management system. None have been, with all having their good and bad points.
