I moved from auckland to northland three years ago, and during this time i have been lure fishing mainly in bream bay and the whangarei harbour. A lot of my working life has been spent in rural areas. Southern taranaki, northern southland, and central otago are places where the backblocks were always on my doorstep. Being keen on outdoor pursuits such as hunting and fishing ,i was often out of phone coverage as i bush-bashed inland on exploratory ventures. You never knew what hidden spots you would find once you got off the beaten path.

Anglers in the greater canterbury region, spanning the majority of the east coast of the south island, still cannot go out fishing for blue cod – the mainland equivalent of the north islander’s snapper – and put a decent feed on the table.

In the last two months we have been deeply involved in the development of seven major submissions responding to fisheries management and policy proposals. The common theme is that excessive catches lead to demands for increased commercial quota. This is not new, but it’s frustrating given the greenwashing rhetoric from officials and industry captains about sustainability and being good guardians of our fish.

Since 2018 legasea, the new zealand sport fishing council, new zealand angling & casting association, and new zealand underwater have collaborated to develop a workable policy alternative to the quota management system (qms). The alternative policy is called rescue fish - ika rauora.
