COROMANDEL BLUEFIN
COROMANDEL BLUEFIN
It was mid-july and the southern bluefin tuna had been running past waihau bay for some time, however, a combination of work commitments and unstable weather systems had prevented me from getting out and giving it a nudge. My mate eric wong was in the same boat. After a quick chat in the office on monday morning it was decided that when the next chance presented itself, we would just have to make it happen. And, as luck would have it, not a day later a one-day weather window

WHITEBAIT FEEDERS OF SPRING
WHITEBAIT FEEDERS OF SPRING
The shallow water flats of the bay of islands were a bit cool over winter. By the end of june, my snapper catch in this wadable water had dropped away to near zero. Only a few fat winter parore on the fly had helped brighten up these gloomy mid-winter days. The cold season kahawai and trevally that i hoped for had simply failed to appear. By the second week of july, i had little to show for all my wading and casting efforts.

GREEN & GOLD
GREEN & GOLD
There have been a few times during the filming of south seas spearo that i’ve found myself feeling a little green, but it’s nothing to do with heavy seas – in fact, it’s usually the opposite. To clarify, i’m not talking about feeling green around the gills, i’m talking about being struck down by the green-eyed monster: jealousy.

DEEPWATER SNAPPER SLOW-JIGGING A DIARY
DEEPWATER SNAPPER SLOW-JIGGING A DIARY
I moved from auckland to northland three years ago, and during this time i have been lure fishing mainly in bream bay and the whangarei harbour. It is important for me to learn areas, so i can fish them successfully with my clients. In the last year or so, i have been going out on reconnaissance trips a bit wider. I have been exploring areas northeast (60m) and even further north (up to 110m) of the hen and chicks looking for workups. I have also done a few lure fishing chart

A lot of my working life has been spent in rural areas. Southern taranaki, northern southland, and central otago are places where the backblocks were always on my doorstep. Being keen on outdoor pursuits such as hunting and fishing ,i was often out of phone coverage as i bush-bashed inland on exploratory ventures. You never knew what hidden spots you would find once you got off the beaten path.

THE MADNESS MUST STOP
THE MADNESS MUST STOP
In the last two months we have been deeply involved in the development of seven major submissions responding to fisheries management and policy proposals. The common theme is that excessive catches lead to demands for increased commercial quota. This is not new, but it’s frustrating given the greenwashing rhetoric from officials and industry captains about sustainability and being good guardians of our fish.
